Day 41, 42, 43 – yes I am still here and yes I am still doing my daily Pilates. As you may have noticed I have however let this blog fall by the wayside a little. So in the interest of keeping it alive despite life getting a lot busier I have decided to no longer do daily posts. Instead I will combine a few days together, especially if I did similar Pilates sessions.

Days 41, 42 and 43 saw me still in Sydney and squeezing in daily self guided Pilates sessions of 20-30 minutes each. One day I was interrupted at the 10 minute mark and had to return to my session later, doing another 10 minutes. I thought whether or not this should ‘count’ so to speak, as each individual session was only 10 minutes. I decided however that seeing as the research demonstrates the benefits of physical activity can be accumulated, it was ok for my Pilates to be accumulated too.

He delivered the Polestar Pilates Rehabilitation series course I attended back in 2009 and had been my Pilates Instructor ever since, until I moved to Perth at the end of last year.

Day 39 – more pain education, more self directed short Pilates sessions, more dinners with friends.

Did you know that approximately 20% of the community suffers from chronic pain?

That it costs us over $33 billion a year.

It costs the US more than the wars in Irag and Afghanistan combined.

The most effective treatment for chronic pain is usually a combination of education and exercise. For more severe cases this may need to be as part of a multidisciplinary team intensive pain management course. For others it may simply mean learning about pain and how it works and then gradually pacing up their exercise.

Curative monotherapies such as surgery and injections typically don’t work for chronic pain.

This is just another reason why I love Pilates. While it is certainly not the be all end all in chronic pain treatment, when carried out by an excellent instructor Pilates can be used to educate and pace up exercise.

Day 37 – today I took the opportunity of being in Sydney to visit my friend Sylvia’s studio. Lively Physiotherapy and Pilates is located in Turramurra on the north shore in Sydney and has both a fully equipped Pilates studio as well as physiotherapy consult rooms. Sylvia was booked so I had a studio semi private session with another colleague, PJ.

Lively has only been open for 18 months and it was absolute delight to use the still very new balanced body equipment. PJ also taught me a bunch of exercises on an inclined reformer called the velocity. One of the best things about this was that the straps are connected to one another so you can control their length. This makes it very challenging to keep everything moving symmetrically!

Day 36 – today I flew to Sydney for a course on pain management. As an added bonus I am staying with my old housemates and can’t wait to catch up with friends and family.

Unfortunately my new super duper mat is also quite large and heavy and there was no chance of it fitting in my suitcase. A few of the girls I would be staying with do Pilates and/or yoga so I assumed they would have a mat and didn’t both packing my old smaller one.

Mistake number one. There was no mat. I had also forgotten that the whole house is floorboards, no carpet.

Mistake number two. Not factoring in that I had organised to spend every spare second while I was in Sydney catching up with a friend or family member.

Result – today was the closest I have come to not meeting my daily Pilates challenge. At 11.45pm, still hanging out with friends I had not seen in a long time, I suddenly realised I had to do Pilates now, right now. In my panic I didn’t think to get a towel but instead just did my own 15 minute mat Pilates session directly on the floorboards. No rolling like a ball tonight!

I survived the hard floor and my friends’ strange looks, and resolved to plan out my daily Pilates for the coming week.

Day 34 – Ever since Jan 1 when I first tried Rhythm Pilates I have been really keen to try another Lisa Hubbard class. However in view of my goal to exposure myself to a wide variety of styles and teachers I decided to try a mixture of other Pilates Anytime classes first. I really enjoyed the last class of hers which I did on my first day of my Pilates Resolution. However I thought it would be smarter this time to do the breakdown class before the full class. Phew, breakdown class, this was a workout on its own. At 40 minutes in length it is actually longer the full class (which is set to a quicker pace with music and very flowing) and really gets you working hard. There’s nice variety to the exercises included and Lisa explains the counting of the exercises as you go so you will know the pace for actual class. I loved it but I’m a little nervous of doing the full class now!

Day 33 – For those of you who are wondering, the reason I have fallen so far behind on my blog is that I have been in Sydney attending a course pain management, particularly for chronic pain. I decided to write about it here because I think it is very relevant to Pilates. For those of you who are more interested you can see an article I’ve written on the topichere. Or watch a great short TED talk by eminent pain scientist Lorimer Moseley here.
More on that later.
While I have been very busy and struggling to keep up with my blog you’ll be happy to know I have maintained my daily Pilates, although I have struggled to attend as many classes.
Today I did my own 20 minutes session using the foam roller. Still currently my favourite prop, I mostly did supine abdominals exercises but also through in swan dive and thread the needle in four point kneeling.

Day 32 – the first day of February, meaning the date is the visually pleasing 1.2.12 and the first day of the second month of my Pilates Resolution.

Today I had a private session with Chael, director of education at LIVe Pilates, and former director of entertainment for her kids on school holidays (schools in Western Australia went back today).

Today we worked mainly on my obliques and serratus anterior connection with lots of rotational work. I always find this focused specific work mentally taxing but rewarding. Interestingly I do much better with visual feedback like watching myself in a mirror. I find it fascinating how some people respond better to visual cues, imagery or feedback, while others may do far better with auditory or tactile. I’ve always been more of a visual learner in general and find it helpful to take notes on things and write lists while my sister was always more of an auditory learner preferring audio books and music. I’d also love to know of this type of preference is innate or something that develops over time and is perhaps able to change. If you have thoughts on this topic I’d love to hear from you.
